Connecting to a website involves exchanging information between your computer and a remote server. In certain situations, this essential operation can prove to be a risk to your system, because the server may send or retrieve more information than simple IP addresses. Even with adequate protection, your computer can still be exposed to anti-P2P organizations, spyware and malware servers or advertising and data tracking services. PeerBlock can reinforce any security measures on your computer, by blocking known IP addresses which point to such servers. It comes with its own list of suspicious websites and it allows you to add your own addresses.

PeerBlock is offered as a freeware application. It works on all popular Windows platforms and it doesn't have a significant impact on a computer's performance. The installation process is straightforward and fast, but you will have to go through a series of initial settings when you launch the application for the first time.

The software's compact user interface displays a few options and a log with blocked or allowed IPs. You can use the available options to enable or disable PeerBlock's main IP filtering feature, view an events history, check for updates or manage a list of suspicious servers. The application can block HTTP transfers as well, if you click the appropriate option. Options for adjusting PeerBlock's general behavior can be found on the same window, but on a different tab. You can set the application to save or archive logs on a regular basis, notify you when it blocks certain elements and more.

As previously mentioned, PeerBlock comes with its own lists of suspicious servers, which are updated automatically. Known anti-P2P organizations, spyware and advertising servers and educational institutions are listed in separate files and you can set the application to monitor and block IPs from specific lists. You can also view the lists themselves and allow one or more servers through your filters permanently or for a limited period of time.

PeerBlock allows you to add your own addresses to the watchlist. If you know of certain websites with malicious purposes, you can add their URLs to a separate list. Alternatively, you can set the program to allow that particular URL through its filters at all times. It is also possible to import and block entire lists of servers, which can be in different formats, including plain text.

Pros

You can block malicious and suspicious servers from communicating with your computer. The application comes with its own lists of known threats, which can be updated. It also allows you to add your own servers to the database.

Cons

There are no serious disadvantages to mention. PeerBlock gives you the possibility of protecting yourself from monitoring services or malicious servers with only a few clicks.
